2. Amazon generates the UPS return label.

3. The return is shipped.

In many cases, sellers are told their address was “incorrect,” despite years of successful deliveries to the same location.

What UPS Confirmed

After direct contact with UPS, the seller received confirmation that UPS maintains its own canonical address records for many buildings. If UPS believes a unit or suite exists for a given address, it may automatically insert that information during processing.

If the address printed on the shipping label does not already include the suite or unit that UPS has on record, UPS treats the change as an address correction and applies a fee.

That fee is billed to Amazon — and then passed through to the seller.

A few minutes later, a moderator stepped in and made a decision that said everything:

The thread wasn’t locked because of me.
It was locked because the reaction confirmed every point the article makes:

One of the most aggressive Wikipedia defenders — the Reddit user u/Brolafsky, who had been spamming hostile replies, stalking my post history, and sending repeated harassing DMs — has now been silently removed from the platform.

Within minutes of filing a report with Reddit Safety: his 9-year account history evaporated, his 145,000+ karma vanished, and his profile was reduced to an empty shell.

For clarity:

This is what Reddit accounts look like when Reddit Admins (not subreddit mods) suspend a user for harassment.

Reddit does NOT show when admins remove an account — it ALWAYS displays “user deleted their account” — it’s by design.

When Reddit bans or admin-removes an account, they intentionally mask it as:

“This user has deleted their account.”

They do this for:

• privacy

• to avoid retaliatory harassment

• legal reasons

So you CANNOT tell the difference by the profile page alone.

You can’t fake this.

You can’t hide it.

And you can’t undo it.

This is the same user who: messaged me multiple times overnight, attempted to “out” my real identity, followed me across threads, accused me of running an “LLM conspiracy,” and posted about me obsessively before his account was nuked.

Then, suddenly — gone.

This is not about one troll getting removed. This is about a pattern:

The exact same gatekeeping culture that poisons Wikipedia spills onto every platform these people touch.

This isn’t a coincidence.

This is a structural flaw in Wikipedia’s DNA.

The Gatekeepers: A Culture of “No”.

For many newcomers, the shock isn’t the decline — it’s the behavior.

In one Representative Case, a contributor followed every rule:

• disclosed their connection

• submitted through Articles for Creation (AfC)

• used proper sourcing formats

• cited scanned newspapers and print materials

• asked respectful questions

• sought clarification on guidelines

And then the machine kicked in.

• Reviewers applied the wrong guideline. When the contributor pointed this out — politely — they were shouted down.

• Veteran editors descended in a classic dogpile. Not to discuss policy. To assert dominance.

• Offline documentation was dismissed outright, Because Wikipedia’s culture no longer understands how pre-digital sources work.

• The contributor was accused of ulterior motives. Without evidence. Without justification. Without restraint.

• Clear writing was declared “AI-generated”. A new, lazy smear tactic used to delegitimize articulate newcomers.

• The contributor was told to “stop editing”. Veterans policing newcomers like unruly children — a recurring theme.

• When the user requested help through the correct venue?. They were reprimanded again.

• And ultimately, they were banned. Not for breaking rules — but for challenging the people who misapplied them.

  

This case did not go wrong. It went exactly the way Wikipedia’s culture is structured to operate. These interactions often occur before your content is even evaluated.

It’s the Wikipedia equivalent of:

“Don’t question the elders, this is our turf.”

This isn’t knowledge stewardship. This is a social hierarchy masquerading as public service.

When “Notability” Becomes a Weapon

Every system reveals its true nature when challenged.

And on Wikipedia, the reaction to even the mildest correction — even the smallest attempt to document real pre-internet history — can be fierce, personal, and deeply revealing of the culture behind the curtains.

In one widely observed example, a contributor attempted to add a verified pre-internet work to the encyclopedia: something with real broadcast history, real archival evidence, and a legitimate place in cultural context.

The issue at hand should have been simple:

• Does the history check out?

• Do the sources verify the broadcast or publication?

• Is the content appropriate under the subject-specific guideline?

Instead, the response from an administrator became a case study in exactly the problem this article describes.

Rather than address the underlying content, the admin framed the attempt to document verified history as:

• promotional,

• suspicious,

• incompetent,

• and somehow deceptive.

The contributor disclosed their conflict-of-interest exactly as policy required.
They openly stated their role in the history they were documenting.
They provided evidence.
They asked for guidance.
They tried to follow the process.

But the platform’s gatekeepers did not treat this as transparency —
they treated it as a threat.

Wikipedia has an unwritten rule that creators, inventors, public participants, and primary witnesses are inherently suspect. Their expertise is treated not as valuable, but as promotional by definition.

This is how history disappears: When the people who lived it are told they’re not allowed to speak.

Below is an excerpt of an administrator’s public justification for blocking the contributor. Read it carefully, because it illustrates the exact dynamics this series is exploring — the way Wikipedia uses tone policing, motive speculation, and personal discrediting to maintain control over historical narratives.

The Anatomy of a Smear Disguised as Moderation

Every sentence of the administrator’s statement carries an assumption — none of which are grounded in policy:

1. “Promotional editing”

= Any attempt by a creator to document their own verifiable history.**

This is exactly how Wikipedia erases creators, archivists, inventors, and early digital pioneers.

**2. “Serious competence issues related to LLM use”

= A modern version of “You don’t belong here.”**

Wikipedia has no policy prohibiting drafting with an AI tool. It has no way to verify who uses what. This accusation is a cultural reflex, not an enforcement of written rules.

**3. “Fabricating guidelines”

= Mistaking disagreement for deception.**

Wikipedia guidelines are notoriously complex and inconsistently applied.
Questioning interpretation is not fabrication; it’s participation.

**4. “They said they are the creator… yet deny being paid”

= A fundamental misunderstanding of conflict-of-interest.**

Wikipedia requires COI disclosure — and explicitly states that being a creator does not make someone a paid advocate.

**5. “Clearly not here to build an encyclopedia”

= A catch-all insult used to justify blocks.**

This line appears in countless block logs. It is not evidence. It is not policy. It is a personal judgement disguised as an administrative rationale.

Why This Matters

This is not about one contributor. This is not about one creative work. This is not even about one administrator.

This is about a broader structural reality: Wikipedia treats firsthand history as inherently untrustworthy, unless rewritten by people with no connection to it.

The result?

• Creatives are pushed out.

• Innovators are silenced.

• Archivists are dismissed.

• Inventors are erased.

• Pre-internet history is deleted.

• Gatekeepers get the last word.

Officially, Wikipedia claims to value openness. But in practice, “notability” has become a weapon — not to protect quality, but to protect control. And the cost to culture, memory, and historical accuracy is immeasurable.

The Volunteer Caste System

Wikipedia’s systems aren’t designed to support professionalism — they’re designed to reward persistence.

Those with the time to patrol every edit become “trusted.” Those with expertise but limited time become “problematic.”

The people least qualified to judge specialized topics become the most empowered to gatekeep them.

And because the site relies on unpaid labor, this creates a bizarre internal caste structure:

• Top-tier hobbyist editors wield administrative power

• Mid-tier editors enforce guidelines like scripture

• New contributors are treated with suspicion

• Subject-matter experts are treated as threats

• Creators and primary sources are presumed biased

• Anyone with real-world stakes is branded “promotional”

Wikipedia has built a system where:

Knowledge is only valid if written by people with no connection to it — and often no understanding of it.

It’s the opposite of how real scholarship works.

The “Donation Paradox”

And yet, while all this is happening, Wikipedia continues to beg the public for money:

“We’re independent!”
“We need your support!”
“We have a tiny staff!”
“Editors are volunteers!”

Which raises a few uncomfortable questions:

• If the platform has no paid editorial staff… where is all that donation money going?

• Why does an organization that raises tens of millions a year have zero paid moderators and no meaningful oversight?

• Why is the world’s “free encyclopedia” dependent on unpaid gatekeepers who actively repel the people trying to improve it?

If Wikipedia cannot handle routine contributions — much less preserve pre-internet history — then what, exactly, is the public financing?

The Consequence: Lost History

The outcome of all this dysfunction is simple: Wikipedia Is Actively Erasing Analog-Era Culture. History disappears.

Specifically:

• independent artists vanish from the record,

• regional culture goes undocumented,

• community media history evaporates,

• early inventions remain invisible,

• local scholarship gets ignored,

• analog-era accomplishments die with their creators.

Unless a subject was blessed with:

• corporate PR,

• major news coverage,

• digital archiving,

• or web-era press…

…it becomes impossible to include it.

The danger here is not theoretical. It’s happening every single day.

Entire chapters of cultural history are being wiped out because Wikipedia has mistaken digitization for notability — and Wikipedia will not bend its system to accommodate anything outside the modern internet.

If you created something meaningful in 1985? Wikipedia doesn’t care.

If your work had cultural impact in 1995 but never hit the digital press? Wikipedia will declare it “non-notable.”

If your history was chronicled in a print publication not yet digitized? Wikipedia will treat it as though it never happened.

And if you try to correct the record? You may be met with hostility, accusations, and sanctions.

All while Wikipedia continues to insist that it is the steward of the world’s knowledge.

This is Not a Small Problem

It Is a Threat to the Accuracy of the Public Record

Wikipedia is where:

• journalists fact-check

• Google draws knowledge panels

• students get information

• the public forms impressions

• institutions build reputations

When Wikipedia excludes or erases analog-era culture, it distorts the historical record. And because Wikipedia is treated as authoritative, its omissions harden into public myth.

This is how cultural history disappears.

Not through malice. Through bureaucratic arrogance combined with digital-age blindness.

The Future of Open Knowledge will Not be Built Here

Increasingly, creators, scholars, archivists, technologists, librarians, and historians are building new platforms:

• digital archives,

• independent wikis,

• institutional repositories,

• Substack-based research hubs,

• and community-driven knowledge projects.

Because the truth is simple:

Knowledge wants a home. Wikipedia just stopped being one.

The platform that promised openness has become a fortress.

The encyclopedia “anyone can edit” is now the encyclopedia “anyone can be blocked from.”

And every time Wikipedia pushes away someone trying to preserve real history,
it reveals what it has finally become:

Not the world’s memory — only the world’s loudest hall monitor.

The Path Forward

Wikipedia Must Confront Its Bias — Or Others Will Document What It Won’t**

If Wikipedia wants to remain relevant, it must:

✔ Acknowledge its digital-age bias

Offline evidence must be treated as valid, not suspicious.

✔ Stop treating creators and experts like criminals

Knowledge from lived experience is not “promotion.”

✔ End the weaponization of COI and AI accusations

They have become tools of harassment, not integrity.

✔ Reform its reviewer culture

Dogpiling should not be the default response to newcomers.

✔ Modernize its notability system

Notability must not be a proxy for fame, privilege, or proximity to elite institutions.

If Wikipedia refuses to evolve, then:

• Journalists

• Archivists

• Researchers

• Academics

• Cultural historians

…will become the new stewards of pre-digital history.

Because someone must preserve what Wikipedia is actively erasing.

And increasingly, that responsibility falls to the people who care enough to fight for the truth — even as platforms like Wikipedia push them away.Just say the word.

When Platforms Choose Profits Over Policies

For years, Google (YouTube) and GoFundMe have assured the public that their Terms of Service and repeat‑offender policies are robust tools for protecting creators, victims of harassment, and intellectual property holders. Yet the reality emerging from discovery in the ongoing lawsuits between Chicago Corner, LLC and Hard Lens Media (HLM) paints a damning picture: both platforms knowingly allowed bad actors to weaponize their systems for harassment, defamation, and copyright infringement—all while monetizing the resulting traffic.

YouTube’s “Three Strike” Policy Is a Lie

According to YouTube’s own policies, any channel accumulating three copyright strikes within 90 days is terminated under its repeat infringer policy, which is supposed to implement the DMCA’s safe harbor requirements under 17 U.S.C. §512(i).

What Online Service Providers (OSPs) Must Do to Qualify

• Designate a Copyright Agent:

  OSPs must register a designated agent with the U.S. Copyright Office to receive notices of claimed infringement.

• Implement a Policy to Terminate Repeat Infringers:

  They must have and enforce a policy for removing users who repeatedly infringe copyrights.

• Act Expediously on Notice:

  Upon receiving a proper notification of a copyright violation, the OSP must act quickly to remove or disable access to the infringing material.

• Lacking Actual Knowledge or Benefit:

  The OSP must not have actual knowledge of the infringing activity and must not derive a direct financial benefit from it.

• Provide a Counter-Notice Process:

  A process must be in place for users to challenge a takedown if they believe the material was removed improperly.”

But internal chat records obtained during discovery show that HLM’s president Kit Cabello successfully manipulated YouTube’s live support chat to bypass this policy. Despite at least three valid DMCA strikes and a pending federal copyright lawsuit, Cabello persuaded YouTube agents to reinstate the channel anyway.

Rather than escalate to YouTube Legal, support agents reinstated HLM’s account through ad‑hoc customer service decisions. This not only violated YouTube’s own Terms of Service but undermined its legal safe harbor defense—because §512 immunity only applies when platforms adopt and “reasonably implement” a repeat infringer policy.

Even more troubling, once reinstated, HLM used the restored channel to mock the takedown process, incite harassment of the plaintiffs, and direct traffic to a defamatory GoFundMe campaign, all while new copyright claims regarding written authorship remained unresolved.

YouTube’s Blurring Excuse Is Not a Legal Defense

In several videos that were flagged for both privacy violations and copyright infringement, YouTube offered a grotesque non-solution: blurring private email and text screenshots —while allowing the rest of the video’s defamatory, harassing auditory narrative to remain live.

This maneuver isn’t just cynical—it’s a direct contradiction of the spirit and letter of Section 512 of the DMCA. Blurring part of a stolen or defamatory video does not eliminate the copyright infringement, nor does it protect victims of online incitement or cyber-harassment. In fact, it empowers bad actors to leave content up just long enough to damage reputations and continue raising funds on platforms like GoFundMe, who then also turn a blind eye.

GoFundMe: Enabling Defamation as a Business Model

Meanwhile, GoFundMe hosts the campaign “Help Kit & Daniel Fight Unfair Lawsuits,” which mischaracterizes the litigation as “frivolous censorship” and falsely accuses the plaintiffs of “weaponizing” trademarks, harassment, and “mocking family deaths”—claims flatly contradicted by court records and deposition testimony.

Despite multiple detailed reports to GoFundMe Legal citing violations of TOS Section 8.02 (“Fundraisers that are misleading, inaccurate, dishonest or impossible”), GoFundMe has allowed the campaign to remain. Even after being notified of these facts, GoFundMe has done nothing. Instead, the platform allowed campaign organizers to update their posts to maintain donations while still containing new defamation and misinformation, as shown in internal emails between GoFundMe and Chicago Corner. The organizers themselves have boasted publicly as well as in sworn depositions about GoFundMe staff working with them to “come into compliance” without removing defamatory statements.

The result: a fundraiser that continues to mislead donors, incite harassment, and spread misinformation indexed by Google search—all while GoFundMe collects its percentage.

Evidence from Discovery: A Pattern of Abuse

The case files and deposition excerpts tell a consistent story:

• Unpaid labor & IP abuse: Luepker testified that Chicago Corner contributors, including Jerry Vasilatos, Edward Heller, and Kira Macoun, were never paid for producing Chicago Corner videos, and there were no written agreements for key works now at issue.

• Harassment disguised as “opinion”: Posts and broadcasts have included personal attacks and mischaracterizations of ongoing litigation while directing audiences to the fundraiser claiming supporters are fighting for “free speech”; not legitimate copyright, defamation or labor department claims.

The Larger Pattern: Platforms That Enable Abuse

This isn’t just a one-off case of platform negligence. It’s a business model:

• YouTube profits from the engagement and ad revenue generated by inflammatory videos—even when flagged for DMCA and privacy violations.

• GoFundMe profits from donations raised through defamatory campaigns—even when repeatedly notified of falsehoods.

• Both platforms invoke “neutrality” while quietly offering special access or compliance “workarounds” to favored users.

For independent creators or whistleblowers, this creates a chilling paradox: platforms market themselves as safe harbors, but in practice, they’re safe harbors for abusers. And as the evidence shows, these abuses were deliberate, sustained, and profitable.

The Legal Stakes Under 17 U.S.C. §512

Under the DMCA, a platform’s immunity depends on adopting and reasonably implementing a repeat infringer policy. Evidence that YouTube reinstated a channel after three strikes, in active litigation, at the request of the infringer, directly undermines its safe harbor claim.

Blurring faces or “partial compliance” doesn’t restore immunity. Nor does allowing a fundraiser with knowingly false statements insulate GoFundMe from potential tort liability when the campaign materially contributes to ongoing defamation and harassment.

The Pattern of Protection: Platforms That Enable Abuse

The facts are no longer up for debate. YouTube and GoFundMe have been repeatedly alerted—with evidence—about serious platform abuse:

• False claims of “free speech” being used to deflect legitimate copyright and defamation litigation.

• Videos weaponized to spread retaliation, doxxing, and false narratives.

• Fundraising off of libel, under the pretense of transparency, while omitting material facts about the lawsuits.

• Repeated TOS violations allowed to persist while the victims are forced to go through bureaucratic black holes to be heard.

  

As of today, these platforms continue to profit from the exposure, engagement, and fundraising enabled by false content.

This isn’t just about Hard Lens Media. This is about the broken enforcement mechanisms of two of the world’s largest tech platforms and their willingness to let creators be targeted so long as content continues to generate traffic and profit.

What Does This Mean for the Public?

If YouTube can ignore DMCA law, court notices, and its own policies, and if GoFundMe can allow campaigns to raise tens of thousands of dollars through defamation, what protections are left for independent creators, journalists, or activists who are being harassed?

The answer is: none, unless systemic reform or court intervention compels accountability.

This is not a matter of policy confusion—it is a matter of selective non-enforcement and corporate willful blindness. And it is precisely this behavior that allows disinformation, harassment, and character assassination to flourish in plain sight.

Demanding Accountability

1. YouTube MUST re-evaluate its compliance with federal DMCA law and immediately suspend channels that have abused the platform during pending litigation.

2. GoFundMe MUST take down campaigns that contain knowingly false and defamatory statements about legal matters and individuals under court protection.

3. Journalists, academics, and digital rights advocates MUST investigate this systemic pattern across platform ecosystems, beyond just this one case.

If your policies mean nothing in practice, then your platforms are nothing more than tools of digital warfare wielded by those loud enough to get away with it.

Why This Matters Beyond One Case

This story isn’t just about Hard Lens Media or Chicago Corner. It’s about whether any independent journalist, creator, or activist can trust the rules platforms publish. When policies can be gamed by a support chat, when harassment can be monetized as “opinion,” and when safe harbor becomes a shield for abuse, the very idea of a “neutral platform” collapses.

As long as YouTube and GoFundMe choose profits over principles, they aren’t neutral intermediaries—they’re active accomplices in digital defamation and intellectual property theft.

But beyond the bravado lies a reality HLM is hiding from its viewers, its supporters, and its GoFundMe donors: they’ve already lost key battles, they are losing on the merits, and their repeated claims that these lawsuits are “frivolous” are demonstrably false.

What Hard Lens Media Isn’t Telling You

There’s one critical fact absent from their recent video and GoFundMe page: on June 27, 2025, the court dismissed HLM’s counterclaim in its entirety with prejudice. That means the court found no merit in their attempt to accuse Chicago Corner of wrongdoing and in view of the with prejudice ruling, HLM is barred re-filing the counterclaim.

Despite this, HLM’s fundraising page still portrays the company as a victim of baseless litigation “designed to silence” them — a gross misrepresentation of the case’s status and substance while frivolously wasting donor funds to pay for unmeritorious counterclaims dismissed with prejudice by the Federal District Judge.

Defamation: A Court Has Already Ruled Against HLM

Even more glaring is their silence about a second legal defeat: a Cook County court has already entered a default judgment against HLM in a defamation lawsuit.

Beyond copyright, HLM’s December 23, 2023 broadcast “Exposed: Chicago Corner & Jerry Vasilatos” falsely accused Vasilatos of fraud, criminal acts, and extortion. Those statements formed the basis of a defamation suit that HLM never even answered — resulting in a default judgment in favor of Vasilatos.

That case — Vasilatos v. Hard Lens Media (2024L014288) — centers on the December 23, 2023 broadcast “Exposed: Chicago Corner & Jerry Vasilatos”, in which HLM falsely accused Jerry Vasilatos of fraud, theft, criminal behavior, and extortion. The court ruled in Vasilatos’ favor when HLM evaded service and failed to respond, prior to the default judgment being entered, thereby establishing liability for defamation and opening the door to compensatory and punitive damages.

None of this — not the counterclaim dismissal, not the defamation judgment, not the substance of the copyright claims — is disclosed in HLM’s fundraising pleas or YouTube histrionics. Instead, they continue to portray themselves as embattled journalists persecuted for exercising free speech.

Censorship” or Consequence? The Real Nature of These Lawsuits

The lawsuits against HLM are not about silencing political opinions. They are about copyright infringement, unpaid labor, and defamation — all well-established causes of action under U.S. law. Here’s what they actually involve:

• Copyright Infringement: Volunteers — not HLM — created the disputed content. They were never paid, never employed, and never signed work-for-hire agreements. As such, they retain copyright ownership under 17 U.S.C. § 201(a) and Community for Creative Non-Violence v. Reid (490 U.S. 730, 1989). Chicago Corner holds the registered copyrights and nunc pro tunc assignments, establishing clear chain of title.

• Unpaid Labor & Misclassification: Contributors logged more than 950 unpaid hours. Labor complaints are now pending before the Illinois Department of Labor — a process designed to protect workers’ rights and identify employer / worker misclassifications, not silence employers.

• Defamation: HLM retaliated against the Illinois Department of Labor complaint by broadcasting knowingly false statements portraying Vasilatos as a criminal and con artist. Courts recognize such attacks — especially when they impute criminal conduct or professional misconduct — as defamation per se, a category where damages are presumed.

This isn’t censorship. It’s accountability.

“Frivolous”? The Facts Say Otherwise

In their September 19 2025 broadcast and elsewhere, HLM repeatedly calls the lawsuits “frivolous” and claims there’s “never been a case”.

That claim collapses under scrutiny:

• A federal copyright infringement case remains active.

• A defamation case has already resulted in a default judgment against HLM.

• HLM’s counterclaim was dismissed with prejudice by the Federal District Judge.

• A labor complaint against HLM is still pending with the Illinois Department of Labor.

“Frivolous” lawsuits do not yield judgments or dismissals of counterclaims. Chicago Corner has very substantive claims with strong legal footing.

Yet HLM has continued to conceal these facts from their viewers, GoFundMe donors, and social media followers. Instead, they continue to defame Chicago Corner and its managing operator — most recently in a September 19 2025 broadcast full of new falsehoods.

The Fundraising Grift: A Campaign Built on Omission

HLM’s ongoing GoFundMe campaign — Help Kit & Daniel Fight Unfair Lawsuits — paints a picture of a free speech crusade. In reality, it’s a vehicle for raising tens of thousands of dollars on a false narrative. Nowhere does it mention:

• HLM’s counterclaim was dismissed.

• That HLM has no legal claim to the disputed works.

• That HLM lost a defamation lawsuit by default.

• The evidence that HLM published defamatory statements is now subject to damages.

• Allegations HLM misclassified volunteer workers and did not pay them while operating a for profit corporation is a violation of state and Federal labor laws.

Instead, Hard Lens Media’s principals Cabello and Luepker present themselves as free speech martyrs, hiding the most damaging truths from the very people funding their legal defense while continuing to smear the owners of Chicago Corner.

This is not just unethical — it borders on fraudulent solicitation. Donors are being misled into funding a legal fight based on distorted and incomplete information.

Testimony That Undermines HLM’s Story

The depositions of the content creators — Jerry Vasilatos, Edward Heller, and Kira Macoun — paint a consistent picture:

• They were volunteers, not employees.

• They were not paid for their work.

• They never signed agreements assigning copyright to HLM.

Kira Macoun testified that she received only a $100 travel stipend and was never employed. Edward Heller confirmed that his contributions were self-directed and uncompensated. And Jerry Vasilatos testified that all production decisions were made independently — outside of HLM’s control. These facts mean HLM does not own the disputed works.

The Defamation Continues

Despite the court’s defamation judgment, HLM continues to slander Vasilatos and Chicago Corner in recent broadcasts — calling them liars, fraudsters, and thieves. They even accuse them of fabricating legal claims to “drive Hard Lens out of business”, “steal its assets” and cause the owners to “take their own lives” — rhetoric that not only undermines ongoing litigation but also exposes HLM to additional liability for continuing tortious conduct.

Conclusion: Defamation is not Free Speech and Accountability Is Not Censorship

Hard Lens Media wants the public to believe they are victims of a witch hunt. The truth is far less dramatic: they are defendants in legitimate legal actions arising from their own conduct. They do not own the creative works they were monetizing. They published false and defamatory statements about former colleagues and private citizens. They misclassified unpaid volunteers. And they continue to mislead the public while soliciting donations under false pretenses.

GoFundMe has long branded itself as a platform rooted in trust — a place where communities come together to help one another in times of hardship. But a troubling fundraiser hosted on its site suggests that trust is misplaced when the company refuses to enforce its own rules, even when presented with compelling evidence of clear violations.

The campaign in question, “Help Defend Free Speech and Fair Use From A Movie Director”, was launched by Hard Lens Media (HLM), a Chicago-based independent media outlet known for its progressive, pro-labor stance. Ostensibly, the fundraiser seeks support for two of HLM’s principals, Kit Cabello and Daniel Luepker, in defending themselves against lawsuits brought by three former collaborators: Jerry Vasilatos, Edward Heller, and Kira Macoun of Chicago Corner LLC.

But the language of the campaign goes far beyond soliciting help with legal fees. Instead, it levels a series of grave accusations — framed as “opinions” — against Vasilatos, Heller, and Macoun. Among the claims: that they engaged in stalking, harassment, doxing, sexual misconduct, mocking a family member’s death, filing frivolous lawsuits to bankrupt HLM, and even contributing to the deaths of family members through stress:

These statements are not only unsupported but directly contradicted by public court filings. The lawsuits — one for copyright infringement, another for defamation — remain active and have survived every legal challenge to date. No court has dismissed the cases or sanctioned the plaintiffs. No harassment or stalking has occurred. The defamatory statements in the GoFundMe campaign mirror those in a December 2023 HLM broadcast, which is itself the basis of the defamation lawsuit in Cook County.

Since April 2025, multiple detailed complaints have been reported to GoFundMe, each laying out the specific falsehoods in the campaign, attaching public court records and transcripts, and citing GoFundMe’s own Terms of Service, which explicitly forbid “fraudulent, misleading, false, or deceptive statements” and “defamatory, harassing” content.

GoFundMe’s response? The fundraiser remains live today, misleading donors and inflicting reputational harm on its targets.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time GoFundMe has looked the other way.

In 2025, Bay Area radio host Ronn Owens was accused of claiming to raise medical funds while diverting donations to legal bills; GoFundMe has failed to act after intense media scrutiny. In 2018, a high-profile YouTuber raised nearly $100,000 through a campaign critics said was built on unverified allegations — with no meaningful intervention from the company until the scam was exposed and GoFundMe subsequently refunded more than $400,000 back to 14,000 donors.

These examples reveal a disturbing pattern: GoFundMe is quick to collect its commission on every donation, but slow — or unwilling — to enforce the very rules that supposedly protect victims from being defamed and donors from being misled. GoFundMe explicitly prohibits fundraisers from using misleading statements or false information about the beneficiary or the purpose of the fundraiser. This includes situations where false statements are made with the intent to harm someone's reputation, which could be considered defamation.

The Hard Lens Media fundraiser is not just a violation of those rules; it’s a warning. If platforms like GoFundMe allow campaigns to weaponize misinformation and defamation under the guise of fundraising, they become complicit in that harm.

Allowing campaigns like HLM’s to stand undermines the credibility of every honest fundraiser on the platform. Worse, it sends a message to bad actors that platforms can be weaponized to punish whistleblowers, harass critics, and mislead donors — all with impunity.

By ignoring repeated, well-documented complaints about HLM’s campaign, GoFundMe has failed not just the plaintiffs — but its own users and its own principles.

Crowdfunding can be a force for good — but only if the platforms uphold integrity. GoFundMe needs to act, not just when the media shines a spotlight, but when credible evidence is placed squarely in its hands.

Until then, its silence speaks volumes.

Hard Lens Media (HLM) is a Chicago-based independent news outlet known for championing progressive causes and labor rights on-air. The network often highlights workers’ struggles – even advocating for a higher minimum wage – and portrays itself as a pro-labor, community-oriented platform. However, former volunteers and collaborators allege a stark contradiction between HLM’s public image and its internal practices. Over a two-year period (2021–2023), HLM relied on unpaid volunteer staff to produce its content, notably for an affiliated program called Chicago Corner.

Volunteers like Jerry Vasilatos, Edward Heller and Kira Macoun logged hundreds of hours of work without compensation. In fact, records show roughly 956 hours of labor contributed by Vasilatos alone over two years with no wages paid. During that time, Hard Lens Media provided no financial support to these workers despite benefitting from their efforts. This alleged exploitation directly contradicts the outlet’s progressive, pro-worker ethos and has now become the center of multiple legal disputes.

Wage Complaint Filed with Illinois Department of Labor

In mid-2023, after parting ways with HLM, Jerry Vasilatos – managing partner of the newly formed Chicago Corner LLC – filed a wage theft complaint with the Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL). The complaint (Wage Claim No. 23-0002688) asserts that Hard Lens Media, a for-profit corporation, violated labor laws by using unpaid labor and misclassifying “volunteers” for work who should have been identified and compensated as employees. Under Illinois and federal law, for-profit businesses generally cannot legally utilize volunteer labor in lieu of paid employees. Vasilatos’ filing detailed how he and colleagues Edward Heller and Kira Macoun received no pay despite regularly hosting and producing content for HLM’s Chicago Corner channel. He also discovered that HLM had been withholding tip revenue donated by viewers: HLM’s owners set up a crypto wallet to collect viewer tips on the Chicago Corner Rokfin streaming platform, and even after selling the channel to the new Chicago Corner LLC cooperative in March 2023, HLM refused to relinquish access to those funds. Approximately $100 in tips (accrued in late 2022 through mid-2023) was never turned over; HLM’s principals claimed the funds were “lost” and blocked efforts to transfer the account to the new owners.

Vasilatos reported that HLM’s co-founder, Daniel Luepker, had promised in a 2022 staff meeting that all Rokfin tip revenue from Chicago Corner would go to the show’s hosts – only to later keep those viewer contributions for HLM’s own accounts. In his IDOL complaint, Vasilatos characterized the retained tips as stolen wages and a clear violation of Illinois minimum wage laws. He notes that Mr. Luepker effectively admitted to this on a public livestream, boasting about retaining tip money that rightfully belonged to the content creators. Such admissions, Vasilatos argues, corroborate his claims of wage theft and retaliation for speaking out.

Defamation and Copyright Lawsuits by Volunteers

The fallout from this labor dispute has escalated into multiple lawsuits. Public court records confirm that Chicago Corner, LLC (the cooperative formed by Vasilatos and former HLM volunteers Edward Heller and Kira Macoun) filed a lawsuit against Hard Lens Media in January 2024. The case, now in U.S. District Court (N.D. Illinois), centers on copyright and trademark claims (Cause: 17 U.S.C. §101). According to filings, the Chicago Corner team alleges HLM improperly used content and intellectual property that rightfully belong to Chicago Corner LLC, likely stemming from HLM’s December 2023 broadcast that featured Chicago Corner’s materials without permission.

The suit may also involve a dispute over the Chicago Corner brand itself, which the former volunteers acquired from HLM. (Indeed, Hard Lens Media’s now dismissed counterclaim filings acknowledge that Vasilatos secured a trademark for the Chicago Corner LLC artwork branding to assert ownership over videos created during the collaboration. HLM claims a Copyright Claims Board proceeding on this issue was dismissed on a technicality, and the matter moved to federal court.)

In addition, defamation litigation is underway. Jerry Vasilatos personally filed a libel/slander suit against Hard Lens Media, Inc. in late 2024, following a particularly inflammatory segment HLM aired about him. This state-court action (filed in Cook County, IL) accuses HLM of making false and damaging statements – essentially retaliation after Vasilatos blew the whistle on the wage issue. The trigger was a December 23, 2023 HLM YouTube video titled “EXPOSED – Chicago Corner and Jerry Vasilatos”, in which HLM’s hosts Kit Cabello and Daniel Luepker publicly attacked Vasilatos and the Chicago Corner team. That video – posted just days after HLM learned of the labor complaint – allegedly contained numerous falsehoods and personal smears against Vasilatos.

In a contemporaneous statement, Vasilatos described the EXPOSED broadcast as a “defamatory video” loaded with retaliatory false claims. He argues that HLM used its platform to punish and discredit him for reporting labor violations, rather than address the substance of the allegations. The defamation suit seeks to hold HLM accountable for reputational harm caused by that broadcast (which was viewed as an intimidation tactic to deter other workers from speaking out).

(Court filings in these cases illustrate the depth of the feud: Hard Lens Media’s response in the federal case even includes a counterclaim of “tortious interference,” accusing Vasilatos and Chicago Corner of trying to “bankrupt” HLM by alerting platforms like YouTube and Rokfin about HLM’s misconduct. HLM alleges the former volunteers sought removal of HLM videos and channels – for example, by filing copyright takedowns of the defamatory “Exposed” segment – which HLM frames as a malicious attack on its business. This underscores how a workplace dispute over fair compensation spiraled into a multi-front legal battle. Hard Lens Media’s counterclaims against Chicago Corner and Vasilatos, have since been dismissed by the Federal Judge overseeing the case on June 27, 2025.)

Retaliatory Social Media Campaign and Harassment

Beyond the courtroom, Hard Lens Media stands accused of waging a public harassment campaign against its former volunteers via social media and broadcasting platforms. In the wake of the IDOL wage complaint, HLM’s official Twitter (X) account engaged in “week-long threads” targeting Vasilatos, misrepresenting the facts of the wage dispute and attacking his character. These posts sought to paint Vasilatos as a vexatious agitator and “serial litigant” – despite his claims being backed by extensive documented correspondence and labor law provisions. Observers noted that HLM’s tone on Twitter became increasingly inflammatory: instead of addressing whether the company failed to pay workers, HLM’s tweets focused on denigrating the Chicago Corner team and dismissing the labor violations as “made-up” or frivolous.

The December 23, 2023 “EXPOSED” video exemplified HLM’s use of its media platform for personal attacks. In that livestream, HLM’s hosts reportedly divulged private communications with Vasilatos and made unsubstantiated allegations against him under the guise of “exposing” the situation. Chicago Corner’s crew perceived this as a blatant misuse of HLM’s audience reach to harass and intimidate a whistleblower. Following the video, Vasilatos and his colleagues reported an uptick in online harassment from some of HLM’s supporters – including trolling, livestream commentary disruptions when Chicago Corner broadcasted and a plethora of alarming ableist comments (Mr. Vasilatos is an amputee).

While HLM’s GoFundMe page accuses Vasilatos of doxing and stalking them, it’s worth noting that no evidence of Vasilatos engaging in such behavior has been made public, whereas HLM’s own content has overtly targeted him (even labeling him as a “disgruntled maniac” in a Tweet posted by HLM friend Jimmy Dore according to Chicago Corner).

This one-sided smear campaign has raised concern in Chicago’s independent media circles: if a supposedly progressive outlet can unleash its fanbase on former contributors for raising labor concerns, what chilling effect might that have on others speaking out?

Fundraiser Defense Campaign – Misrepresenting the Facts?

Hard Lens Media has launched a public legal defense campaign via GoFundMe, which local journalists may want to scrutinize for potential misrepresentations. Branded as “Help Defend Free Speech and Fair Use From a Movie Director,” the fundraiser portrays HLM as the victim of an “unfair” crusade.

In its original description, HLM referred to Jerry Vasilatos – an independent filmmaker by trade – as “a serial litigator” and claims he and unnamed “proxies” have been “stalking, threatening, stealing, doxing, defaming” HLM for two years. It further alleged that Vasilatos is trying to “sue [HLM] for $500,000 and take our YouTube channels after failing to build their own”.

These incendiary claims are not only unsubstantiated in the fundraising pitch, but they also starkly contradict the documented timeline of events. In reality, Vasilatos and his colleagues built up the Chicago Corner channel from scratch under HLM’s umbrella, growing it from a few hundred subscribers to over 1,600 before conflicts arose. Far from “failing to build their own” channel, they arguably succeeded – which is precisely why they sought ownership and a fair share of revenue from their work. Moreover, HLM’s original GoFundMe narrative that “we have been forced into silence for 2.5 years” and are now fighting a grand battle for free speech is misleading. In truth, HLM was anything but silent: it was actively using its platforms to lambaste the former volunteers (the EXPOSED video, social media rants, etc.). The legal actions Vasilatos initiated are not about censoring HLM’s speech or “undoing fair use,” as the fundraiser suggests, but about addressing specific harms – defamation and alleged misuse of intellectual property – and recovering wages. HLM’s plea that the lawsuit could “destroy YouTube” if the ex-volunteers prevail is a dramatic exaggeration. What’s actually at stake is a much more local and concrete issue: whether a media company can treat workers as unpaid “volunteers” in a for-profit enterprise and then retaliate against those workers for seeking redress. Notably, HLM’s own court filings acknowledge key facts that the GoFundMe glosses over. For instance, HLM admits that multiple legal venues have been involved – including a federal lawsuit and even a Copyright Claims Board proceeding that was dismissed on procedural grounds. And while HLM frames those cases as baseless harassment, the core issues (ownership of content, right to wages) remain unresolved in court. By casting the plaintiff as a “serial litigator” and implying bad faith, HLM’s fundraising pitch potentially libels Vasilatos anew, given that no court has ruled in HLM’s favor on the merits. Such public characterization could itself become evidence in the ongoing defamation case.

The newly produced defamatory video that HLM published to launch the GoFundMe page on April 26th, 2025 has since been removed with the explanation "We have been advised to make our video temporarily private on the advice of our lawyer. Due to pending action from the opposing council. We will have more information soon." The inflammatory GoFundMe rhetoric was also revised by HLM on May 5th, 2025, with the explanation “We had to make changes to this donation page, we can't say what, however please help us in this fight so that this nightmare will end” but not before the page had already raised over $8,000 from its supporters off of the previous libelous narrative.
